Many of my clients know that at the end of the year, instead of sending out Christmas cards, QuickPatents makes a donation to Free Wheelchair Mission, which is an organization founded by Don Schoendorfer, an MIT Mechanical Engineer who figured-out how to a make low-cost ($77.91) yet durable wheelchair out of resin garden chairs, a pair of mountain bike tires, and a frame. Assembled by volunteer teams in-country, these wheelchairs are given away (with no strings attached) to those who would otherwise have to crawl on the ground to get around.
I’ve been asked if Don has patented this wheelchair. Interestingly, the answer is no. While he is the inventor on over 50 patents for other devices, mostly medical-related, he didn’t patent this particular invention because, I’m sure he would say, nothing would make him happier than if others copied it and did the same thing he’s doing! There are over 100,000,000 people who need wheelchairs, and Don’s organization has delivered over 800,000. That’s a large number, but still less than 1% of the need, after more than a decade of giving away free wheelchairs. They’re trying to hit 1 million chairs donated by 2017. Will you consider helping?
This year marks the 10th anniversary of QuickPatents. We’ve obtained over 1,600 patents for our clients in that period of time, averaging about one patent every 3 days. I can’t thank you enough for allowing me to do what I love and help inventors succeed! So thank you for being a client, and I hope we can help you again sometime soon, perhaps in 2015? Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
